Statement des Künstlers
Die Requisiten, die ich zum Bau der Pagoden-Serie verwendet habe und die eine Mischung aus meiner Jugend, meinem Paradox und meinen Zweifeln widerspiegeln, sind in meinem Gedächtnis. Sie sind zum Einsturz verurteilt... Meine Kindheit, mein Paradoxon, meine Erziehung und die ideologische Romantik meiner tief eingeprägten Jugend hängen an den Pagoden.
Die überwältigende Stimmung in Han Leis Werk ist Nostalgie. In der Nostalgie findet Han Lei die Zeitlosigkeit. Er liebt Bilder, die die Mobilität einfrieren, Bilder, die zu unveränderlichen und bleibenden Repräsentanten werden. Ob er uns nun den typischen nebligen chinesischen Berg präsentiert, den wir uns aus unserer Kenntnis klassischer Gemälde vorstellen, oder ob er das schöne weibliche Profil sucht, an das wir uns von alten Fotografien zu erinnern scheinen. Während die Kamera ein höchst demokratisches Instrument ist, das jedem lebendigen Moment eine gleichberechtigte Bedeutung verleiht, hat Han Lei dieses Instrument benutzt, um eine Hierarchie von Typen zu schaffen. Er interessiert sich für Bilder, die größer, dauerhafter und typischer sein können als andere Bilder ihrer Klasse. Mit diesen Bildern konstruiert Han eine Welt, die eine Ordnung und eine Ästhetik lebendig werden lässt, die sowohl vertraut als auch zeitlich weit entfernt ist.

Artist Statement
The props, which I used to build the Pagodas series and to reflect a mixture of my youth, my paradox and doubts, are in my memory. They are bound to collapse...My childhood, my paradox, my education and the ideological romanticism of my deeply engraved boyhood are all hung on the pagodas.
The overwhelming mood in Han Lei’s work is nostalgia. In nostalgia Han Lei finds timelessness. He loves images that freeze mobility, images that become immutable and lasting representatives. Wheather he presents us with the typical misty Chinese mountain we imagine from our knowledge of classical paintings, or he seeks out the beautiful female profile we seem to remember from old photographs. While the camera is a most democratic instrument, equitable in granting significance to any living moment, Han Lei has used this instrument to create a hierarchy of types. He is interested in images that can be greater, more permanent and more typical than other images of their class. With these images Han constructs a world that bring alive an order and an aesthetic that is both familiar and distant in time.
